Dedham - When not volunteering or reading for the James Joyce Ramble (Sunday, April 24 at the Endicott Estate), Jeff Boudreau produces Celtic, old-time, bluegrass and progressive string band concerts in the greater Boston area. This season notloB will be presenting eleven concerts, nine at the Somerville Armory, one in Arlington and one on the grounds of the Endicott Estate.
Funded in part by a grant from the Dedham Cultural Council, an agency of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the Dedham concert will be free. To offset production costs, a free-will donation of $5-10 with a $15 cap for families is requested.
According to the grant application on file with the Dedham Cultural Council, “the objective of this production is to present to all who attend, fans and neophytes alike, a representation of traditional Celtic music…” The musicians will give a pre-concert talk and answer questions about the music’s origins, the instrumentation and how Celtic music has become integrated with American culture. The talk will be followed by a performance of traditional Irish Celtic tunes. The ensemble members will be available to the audience after the performance to answer further questions.
Boudreau, who is of Breton-Celtic heritage and serves as a member of the Arlington Cultural Council, formulated the idea during last year’s road race. “I looked around at the estate, the grounds and the infrastructure, particularly the large tent used on race day for registration, merchandise sales and administration. I learned from (Ramble founder/director) Martin Hanley the tent is erected the Friday before and goes unused on Saturday. As on-site Ramble registration is held in the Endicott house, it was a logical to present a Celtic concert to race registrants and town/area residents.”
The concert will be on the lawn of the Endicott Estate, or, in the event or rain, under a large tent. Like a festival, patrons are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
The James Joyce Ramble Celtic Concert will feature the local Irish Celtic band Boxty.
Straight off the boat from Dublin Ireland, Cormac Marnell hails from the South side in Ballinteer. Cormac began playing music only five years ago. As one of the founding members of The Locals and then The Auld Locals, Cormac made a name for himself in the Boston pub scene. He went on to open up for The Saw Doctors as well as playing every major Irish Festival in New England. Cormac performs on the 5 string banjo, tin whistle and harmonica as well as lead vocals.
Dave Bowman hails from Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Cape Cod and has had an interest in Irish traditional music for nearly a decade. Skilled on the tin whistle, the mandolin, octave mandolin and tenor banjo Dave lends a diverse range of talents to the folk stylings of the band. Dave is a capable singer who likes to perform classics like "The Handsome Cabin Boy" and "Tom Dooley".
