More often than not, we are fortunate to receive an email or a quick phone call, letting us know of something interesting or noteworthy, taking place in one of the schools around town. It is with a great deal of pride, and thanks to the administration, principals, teachers, and students, that we are allowed access to these schools and are able to follow their exploits and share their stories with the entire community.
For the better part of the last decade, Sue Scully-Rose has been the TV/Video and Film Instructor at Dedham High School. Recently, on the verge of the 9th Annual DHS Media and Film Festival and Scully Awards (Wednesday May 7, 2014 at 7pm at the school), we had the pleasure of chatting with Mrs. Scully and learning a whole lot more about her class and the program offered at Dedham High School.
With a warm smile and a great deal of enthusiasm, Sue Scully met with us to share her story. Right from the start, we realized that it was “all about her students.” Mrs. Scully has been at Dedham High School for 10 years now, and this – the Scully Awards – is the culmination of all of her students “projects” over the school year.

When Mrs. Scully first began her program, she offered only 2 video classes for the Seniors at the school. Now, with the “influx of media in all aspects of all of our lives, the TV/Video and Film program at DHS has almost a dozen classes available to all students in grades 9-12.”
Two years ago, in the Fall of 2012, Dedham High School stepped up and renovated the school`s entire studio. There is now a new TV stage and set (similar to a watching the news) with cameras and lighting. Mrs. Scully attributes her success to the “continued creativity and dedication of all of her students along with the unbelievable support she receives from the staff at the school.”

Run much like the Oscars, students at the high school are recognized each year for their work. The festival, entirely student run, showcases a wide range of projects that have been reviewed, nominated, and will be shown to the public in various categories. We were quite impressed as we reviewed the categories themselves – Best Video, Best Game Show, Best Commercial, Best Interview, Best Visual Poem, and Best Mini Biography just to name a few.
Approximately 100 students are involved in this, the 9th Annual Awards, and Mrs. Scully is beaming over their work. Each team, in each category, will have a winner and each winner will receive a lovely trophy – thanks to Dedham`s own Paul McMurtry and the folks at the Dedham Community Theatre.
Mrs. Scully would also like to thank everyone else involved in this event, including Dedham Savings for their generous donation, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Scully, the Dedham Alumni Association, the administration, and of course – her students!
This year`s student hosts will be Andrew Kiklis and Lily Straight-Rattet and the 2014 logo designer was 9th grader Gabriella Sabatino.
Tickets are available for the 2-hour event at the door – on Wednesday May7, 2014 at 7pm for a modest fee of $7.00 – students for $5.00 Please stop by and share their creative productions!
