Deval Patrick's Brother-In-Law Sentenced For Rape

Former Gov. Deval Patrick's brother-in-law, Bernard Sigh, was sentenced to six to eight years in prison after being convicted of rape.

DEDHAM, MA — The brother-in-law of former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick was sentenced to six to eight years in prison with 15 years probation Monday after being found guilty of rape, stalking, kidnapping and witness intimidation, according to the Norfolk County District Attorney's office. Bernard Sigh, 67, of Milton, was arrested in December 2017, after he hid in a women's closet in his underwear before forcing himself on the woman, covering her mouth and raping her, prosecutors said.

Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth McLaughlin asked Judge Robert Cosgrove to impose a sentence of 17 to 22 years with 15 years of probation. While, Defense Attorney Ethan Yankowitz requested five years in prison with three years probation.

"Despite the added pressure surrounding this case, among other barriers, this victim demonstrated great courage and resolve in pushing through to today's resolution," District Attorney Michael Morrissey said following Sigh's conviction two weeks ago. "Not every sexual assault or domestic violence victim is positioned to endure the burdens our system places on them — this victim deserves our support and gratitude."
