“As a lifelong Democrat, I believe the position of Sheriff should not be a political one, and it should be held by someone that understands law enforcement and corrections, as well as the many challenges of substance abuse disorders and mental health. I have great respect for Jerry McDermott and all the work he has done as Sheriff. I am very proud to endorse Jerry because he's the only one in this race who has the experience, knowledge, temperament, and management skills to do the job. I'm looking forward to voting for Jerry, and I ask all my supporters to do the same,” said Coughlin upon throwing his support to McDermott.
Upon receiving the endorsement of Coughlin, Sheriff McDermott said, "I am deeply honored to have the support of Jimmy Coughlin, someone who has 29 years of experience in law enforcement, and is highly respected. He is a person of great integrity and who loves giving back to the community. I appreciate his support and friendship and look forward to continuing working with him as Sheriff."
