Mass. Lottery Suspends License Of Dedham Seller

It is alleged that the store cashed tickets for other people, a violation of Lottery rules.

DEDHAM, MA — A Dedham store will not be allowed to sell Lottery tickets for a month following the discovery that it overstated how many winning tickets they sold.

The Dedham 7 Eleven has been hit with a 30-day suspension. The store was one of five that was the focus of a WHDH investigation into businesses that were selling so many winning tickets that it was described as "mathematically impossible" by Michael Sweeney, the Lottery’s Executive Director.

The investigation determined that the five stores violated Lottery rules and found some were cashing tickets for other people. The stores sold at least 150 large prizes each over the past five years.

Sweeney said the stores were representing other people and may have been doing it in an attempt to avoid paying taxes. At least four of the businesses were buying winning tickets and keeping a portion of the prize for themselves.

The owner of the 7 Eleven told WHDH that the punishment is too harsh and is jeopardizing his business.
