Talks Start For 2018-19 School Calendar

As it stands, it looks like it's going to be a post-Labor Day start.

DEDHAM, MA — An early Labor Day could mean a late post-holiday start for the Dedham schools next year.

The school committee had their first look at the proposal 2018-19 calendar at their Nov. 21 meeting. As it stands, there are five early release days for staff development, a full staff development day on Nov. 6, which is election day, and a half-day on the final day before the holiday break.

Superintendent Michael Welch said it is in the teacher's contract that school activities can't begin Sept. 1, meaning that the teachers would not return until Sept. 4 at the earliest. Welch, however, said there may be an opportunity to discuss agreeing to conducting staff development days on Aug. 30 and Sept. 4.
