Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts honored six role models at the 21st annual Leading Women Awards Breakfast, held at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston. Honorees Beth I.Z. Boland, Partner Bingham McCutchen LLP; Joanna Lau, Founder and CEO, Lau Technologies; Juliette C. Mayers, Executive Director, Multicultural Marketing, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Speaker and Author; Marie A. Turley, Executive Director, City of Boston Women’s Commission; Susan Windham-Bannister, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Massachusetts Life Sciences Centers; and Leading Man in a Supporting Role Bill Fine, President and General Manager, WCVB TV and WCVB.com. Each of the six honorees was paired with a Girl Scout who has similar interests or career aspirations, and who introduced the honoree and presented the award at the breakfast.
“Each year Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts honors remarkable leaders who have made a positive impact in their career and community,” explained Ruth N. Bramson, CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts. “The Leading Women Awards is a way for our girls to meet great role models and for our supporters to learn how Girl Scouts is creating future women leaders.”
The Leading Women Awards drew an audience of more than 600 professionals and friends of Girl Scouting, with many influential members of the Greater Boston business community WCVB Channel 5 news women Karen Holmes-Ward and Susan Wornick, Trish Karter, Founder of the Dancing Deer Baking Co., Keith Motley, Chancellor of Umass Boston and Michael Durkin, President of The United Way, were among those in attendance to celebrate the honorees.

New to the ceremony this year, the Green Ribbon for Girls
program helped the organization raise additional funds to support leadership programs for girls. Juliette Gordon Low organized the first group of Girl Scouts in the United States in 1912, with the funding she received from selling her grandmother’s necklace of rare pearls. Guests attending the Leading Women Awards Breakfast were able to purchase a Green Ribbon for the opportunity to win an 18” single strand Lagos pearl necklace donated by Neiman Marcus Natick. This program sponsored by Citizens bank, funds girl programs. Those who purchased a ribbon were entered to win a pearl necklace, a gift basket centerpiece provided by Neiman Marcus Natick or another Girl Scout item.
