Help protect & restore the Charles River - become a volunteer water quality monitor

The Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA) is looking for volunteers to help monitor the health and water quality of the river!

Interested in the water quality of the Charles River? Want an excuse to be outside? The Charles River Watershed Association is looking for water quality volunteers to help monitor the health of the river!

Our water quality monitoring volunteers collect river samples once every month (usually on the third Tuesday) at sites all across the Charles River watershed – from the headwaters in Milford to the Charles River Dam in downtown Boston.

By becoming a monthly monitoring volunteer, you will be a part of one of the oldest and largest volunteer sampling programs in the country. Since the inception of the program in 1995, our volunteer samplers have amassed the most extensive water quality data sets of any river in the nation. This consistent and comprehensive data set forms the foundation for all of CRWA’s efforts to protect and restore the Charles River.

We have several vacancies for monthly water quality sampler positions at sites in Newton, Wellesley, Dover, and Bellingham. In addition, we are also seeking regional samplers for the Medfield, Bellingham, and Newton regions.

We are always accepting applications from interested volunteers in all parts of the watershed. If there are no immediate vacancies in your area, you can join the program as a substitute sampler until a position near you opens up.
