Natick and Sherborn Awarded Fire Safe Education Grants

BOSTON- Representative David Linsky (D-Natick) announced today that Governor Charles Baker and Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas A. Turco, III have awarded grant funds for the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program and the Senior S.A.F.E. Program to cities and towns in the Commonwealth, including two in the Fifth Middlesex District. The Natick Fire Department was awarded a total of $8,308 and the Sherborn Fire Department was awarded a total of $4,954 for FY19.

“It is incredibly important that the residents of the Commonwealth learn about fire safety, and the S.A.F.E. program has proven its effectivity,” said Representative Linsky. “I applaud the Natick and Sherborn Fire Departments for their continued dedication to this program.”

The S.A.F.E. program teaches students to recognize the dangers of fire and fire hazards of tobacco products through key fire safety behaviors incorporated into math, science, language arts, and health or physical education lessons. Since the S.A.F.E. program began in 1996, the average annual child fire deaths have been reduced by 74%.

Senior S.A.F.E. works with seniors, the most vulnerable of populations at risk of fire related deaths, on fire prevention, general home safety, and how to be better prepared in the event of a fire.
