The Sherborn Lions Club donated $200 to Baypath Humane Society to celebrate the shelter’s recent work with visually impaired dogs. In addition to finding loving homes for 358 dogs and 517 cats last year, the shelter also helped several blind dogs to find a second chance at happiness.
Each year, the Sherborn Lions Club supports many charities that help visually impaired people. This year, the club is also supporting Baypath Humane Society for the special care they gave to blind dogs as well as other animals with special needs. “We were moved to hear of how Baypath Humane Society helps dogs and cats of all types, including several visually impaired dogs,” said Club President Kathy Hammer. “Their love and dedication to the animals is an inspiration.”
Baypath Humane Society is a no-kill shelter in Hopkinton that has been finding homes for stray and unwanted animals for more than 35 years. This winter, a two-year old lab mix named Dino was brought to Baypath Humane after being rescued by a shelter in Georgia. He had a tough start to life and no one to care for him. The shelter staff saw what a sweet dog he was, and worked very hard to find him the ideal home. Despite being blind, Dino learned to walk on a leash, and play well with other dogs. He is now living with his new family, including his “sister” dog Emma.

Earlier this year, the shelter also found homes for a pair of blind Doberman Pincher puppies. Baypath Humane Society staff and volunteers worked closely with the young puppies, named Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, to build their confidence and socialize them until they were adopted. To help ensure the puppies’ success, the shelter behaviorist also shared advice on helping visually impaired dogs to learn to navigate their new home. Happily, both puppies were soon adopted, and they are thriving in their new homes.
