Square Foot Gardening

Monday morning - again. Find your mind wandering to football playoffs, Girl Scout Cookies and Spring Vacation plans? Let your mind wander a just a little bit further outside and into the garden...

Is a practical application of gardening which focuses on small planting areas and emphasizes the use of organic techniques, composting and bio intensive concentrations.  Long story short - big things, small packages, grown naturally.

Not too far off from everyday life now is it?  Who doesn't want the best RIO (return on investment) - whether financial portfolio, aerobic workout or AFC championship.  What I've come to understand is that bigger is not always better, if it is cultivated it will grow and the fruits of labor always taste better when you've done the work yourself.

How does one eat a dinosaur?  Well, one bite at a time of course!  How does one travel the world - one step at a time, and how does one grow back in touch with his environment - one square foot at a time.

What's your favorite food?  What tickles your fancy, tantalizes your taste buds and melts in your mouth?  Start there - whether harbored in pot or highlighted in backyard plot, plan to grow this special specimen this spring and summer.  Prepare the spot, purchase the seed (or seedling) and foster its growth. Favorites always command our attention and beginning gardeners will find surer success in personal investments.

January is the perfect time to set your goals, start your research and get on your marks.  Just remember to start small and focus on technique.  This year I'm growing heirloom tomatoes, a green lawn (crabgrass offers the perfect hue) and closer to my children - what do you have planned?
