A free screening and discussion of the PBS documentary Where Do the Children Play? will be held at the Mansfield Public Library on Wednesday, May 18, from 7:00 – 9:00pm.
Children today spend an average of 12 hours less per week in free play than they did 20 years ago. Our 50-minute film studies how kids play in three different types of communities. Following the film our panel of childhood specialists will lead a discussion about why open-ended play is important for healthy child development. We will look at why this kind of play is disappearing and consider such factors as television, video games, “stranger danger,” and more.
Our panel includes Jane Rotondi, M.Ed., teacher, and camp director at The Children’s Museum in Easton. Paula Peterson, executive director of The Children’s Museum in Easton, will facilitate our discussion.
