Legal and Protective Services Students Conduct Mock Search and Rescue Operations at Southeastern Regional Voc Tech

Legal and Protective Services students demonstrate their skills in mock search and rescue

Having already received their various Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) certifications, Legal and Protective Services majors at Southeastern demonstrated their skills in a series of mock search and rescue operations in the woods adjacent to the Foundry Street campus. Students were required to search for and find hurt or injured “victims,” then triage and transport them to the mobile command unit while utilizing radio communication and keeping a log of times and details.

Operating the incident mobile command unit was Bristol County Deputy Sheriff Salgado. Colonel David Gavigan, in charge of the Homeland Security Unit at the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, Southeastern’s Resource Officer Chris Aker and Legal and Protective Services instructors were also in attendance for this 4th annual demonstration. Preschoolers in the Early Childhood Education program enjoyed exploring the mobile command unit, hearing the siren, and meeting the deputy sheriff.

The mock search and rescue operations are a culminating activity to demonstrate the practical application of the Legal and Protective Services students’ federal Citizens Emergency Response Training certifications from FEMA. During their freshman year, the students are required to pass their Instant Command System Training (ICS). By sophomore year, students add their National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification, with juniors earning their certifications in Citizens Emergency Response Training (CERT).
