Before we just write off the month of April and dive into the summertime, please take advantage of some of the free programs we’re offering at the Gus Canty Community Center. On Saturday, April 11th, we are featuring a family event called the 2015 Scavenger Hunt! Families will pack into cars and will be given detailed clues and challenges, visiting iconic landmarks in Falmouth. Prizes will be awarded to the team with the most points at the conclusion of the day. During the April vacation school week, on Wednesday, April 22nd, we are offering a unique event for ages 6-10 called the Springtime Sports Spectacular. This event will feature multiple sports in one day, and medals will be awarded to all participants. Another program launching in April is the After School Program, through the Jack’s Pact group. This program will be offering gym games & homework help for 5th & 6th graders from Mullen Hall Elementary School on Tuesdays & Thursdays from April 7th – April 30th.

It’s officially Baseball season, despite the lingering piles of snow that litter the curbsides and parks in town. Have no fear, as many coaches, players, and volunteers have worked rigorously to prepare the baseball diamonds in town for the ensuing season. For all those still interested in signing up for one of our Spring Baseball leagues, we offer various options for multiple age groups. We are offering a coed Wiffle T-Ball League (ages 4 & 5), coed Junior Baseball (ages 6 & 7), coed Pony League Baseball (age 8), and the Girl’s Softball League (grades 2 – 8). All games are played on Saturdays, except for coed Wiffle T-Ball, which will be played on Tuesdays & Thursdays. The first day of the season is April 25th and we are still looking for volunteer coaches, so please contact us if you’re interested. Our little sluggers need you. For all those senior citizens looking to get out of the house this Spring to engage in some light exercise and friendly banter, you might be interested in registering for our Senior Walking and Talking program. This unique outdoor program is offered to active seniors only, combining some easy pace walking along with some pleasant conversation. We conduct this fun and interactive activity at various picturesque locations in the Upper Cape area. The walks are scheduled for Tuesday mornings (9:00- 11:00 AM), from April 21st to June 9th and the fee is $10. Transportation is provided by the Falmouth Recreation Department to the various walking locations (Falmouth bike path, Cape Cod Canal bike path, etc).

Be on the lookout for more programs starting next month! We are offering a unique and free program for 1st & 2nd graders in town called the Early Engineers program. If your child likes to build things and play with Legos, then this is the program for them. We are also featuring some free special events for families such as the Mother & Son Dance (Friday, May 1, 2015 from 6:30-8:00pm), and the Father & Daughter Dance (Friday, June 5, 2015 @ 6:30-8:00pm). Please call our front desk or visit our website for all registration questions and information regarding all current and upcoming programs offered to the community (508-457-2567; www.falmouthmass.us/rec).

The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to Tristan Leachman. Tristan has been volunteering his time with the Jack’s Pact program on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year. He also has spent time coaching indoor soccer with our youth program at the Gus Canty Community Center. He always makes the gym games more exciting for the kids and we appreciate all of his positive energy. Thanks Tristan.
