Are there ever any “things that are best forgotten?” Perhaps, but we believe that revisiting past scandals can remind us that history was just real life before it was written down. This new walking tour covers the shadier side of local history, from petty feuds and social spats to serious crimes of robbery and murder. You’ll discover eleven events that really happened, but are rarely mentioned in published histories of our town. For instance, we will tell you about a colonial minister who desperately wanted a divorce, a town official caught with counterfeit money, and an unsolved murder that may have been committed by Prohibition-era gangsters.

The 35th Woods Hole Film Festival, “Bold Films, Bright Futures: 35 Years of Films That Matter,” kicks off Saturday, July 25, running for eight exciting days through Saturday, August 1. With feature-length and short films from around the world, engaging Q&amp;As with filmmakers, a master class, panel discussions, a workshop, unforgettable live music parties, and an awards ceremony, this year’s Festival offers something for everyone. Come for the films—stay for the conversation!
In celebration of the 35th
year, 40 festival alums, several of whom have gone on to become Oscar winners or nominees after their films screened at the festival in the past, are either returning with their latest films, or they are leading workshops and participating in panel discussions.
As the longest-running film festival on Cape Cod and the Islands—and one of the oldest in New England—the Woods Hole Film Festival has long championed emerging, independent filmmakers, especially those with ties to the region. This year’s selections were narrowed down to an exciting presentation of independent cinema, with 127 films from 23 countries, including 9 World, 2 North American, and 51 New England premieres by both first-time and veteran filmmakers.
The festival’s thematic strands include films and filmmakers from New England—particularly Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands—films about music and musicians, and films about science and the environment in conjunction with the festival’s “Bringing Science to the Screen” program.The festival’s intimate seaside setting allows for meaningful conversations between filmmakers and audiences—whether during post-film Q&amp;As, as well as on the street—you never know who you might bump into! Tickets are $18 in advance, $20 on day-of-show; students and military, $10. Discounted member tickets, festival passes, and ticket packages are also available. Denise Leone began her creative journey by creating mobiles and wind chimes, transforming these coastal treasures into unique, handcrafted pieces. Through mixed media work, she combines her love of nature, appreciation for craftsmanship, and interest in culture and design. Each piece reflects the beauty of Cape Cod, the beaches around the world, and the stories found along its shores, with the hope of inspiring others to see the natural world through art. Of her work, Denise says: “My inspiration comes from living on Cape Cod and from my family’s rich artistic heritage. Surrounded by miles of beautiful beaches, I find endless inspiration in nature. While exploring the shoreline, I collect treasures such as seashells, sea glass, driftwood, and other natural elements that become the foundation of my artwork.”
From childhood, Anne Torry-Ballou wanted to be an artist. Family outings into woods, fields, hills, along streams and rivers, and the shores of several states, instilled a love and respect for nature. Respected art teachers in school taught her to look at the world and notice lights and shadows, color hues and complements, depth and perspective. Early lessons in art history gave her insight into the world of painting, and she was specifically drawn to the work of the French Impressionists.
Working almost exclusively with acrylic paint, with occasional forays into watercolor studies, she uses photographs as references to document placeholders in the development of the work. A chiaroscuro sketch on the canvas is made using burnt and raw sienna, white, and burnt and raw umber. The work is developed to capture light, shadows, color, and energy by applying color in layers of paint and glazes. While her recent work is primarily landscapes and seascapes, she also creates floral paintings and occasionally takes on commissions.
Colleen Corson is a multimedia artist and clothing designer who believes that art shouldn’t just hang on a wall – it should be lived in, moved in, and experienced. Her journey as an artist is rooted in a deep love for texture, color, and storytelling. On canvas, she expresses this through multimedia painting, blending different materials and techniques to create rich, layered visual narratives. As a clothing designer, Colleen views garments as wearable canvases. Her designs are created for those who see fashion as a form of personal expression, blending thoughtful craftsmanship with a modern, artistic aesthetic. “Whether I am manipulating paint on a canvas or fabric on a form, my goal remains the same: to create distinct, authentic pieces that speak to the soul,” says Colleen.

Join us for a screening to honor the extraordinary life of acclaimed artist David Hockney, who passed away on June 11, 2026, at the age of 88. In tribute, Exhibition on Screen is re-releasing this 2017 documentary, featuring intimate, in-depth interviews with the artist himself. Sea Stars Early Learning Center offers a balanced program that incorporates play-based learning, structured lessons, and physical activities. Children are encouraged to explore their interests, whether through music, art, science, or outdoor exploration. There’s a focus on developmental milestones, including fine motor skills, communication, and social interaction. The facility focuses on helping children develop strong social skills through group activities, games, and cooperative learning. There’s an emphasis on emotional intelligence, teaching kids how to manage their feelings and resolve conflicts peacefully. Our amazing helps kids learn to share, collaborate, and support one another, fostering a sense of community. The facility embraces children from all backgrounds and is sensitive to cultural differences, making sure all children feel accepted and valued. The facility features a large, secure outdoor play area with age-appropriate equipment. Children spend plenty of time outdoors, engaging in physical play and exploring nature. There may also be gardening activities. The building is designed with child safety in mind, featuring soft corners, non-toxic materials, and secure fencing around outdoor areas. Access points are monitored and locked to ensure only authorized individuals can enter. There’s a first aid kit and trained staff on hand at all times to handle any emergencies. The classrooms and play areas are spotless, with an abundance of natural light streaming in through large windows. The space is well-organized, with age-appropriate toys, books, and learning materials accessible to children. There’s a cozy reading nook, art stations, and sensory play areas where kids can explore their creativity. Our staff is certified in child development, first aid, and CPR, but they also have a genuine passion for working with children. Melissa Anderson and Leigh-Ellen Ferreira are two Falmouth natives who have spent many years working with children.
