Meet Children’s Author Danna Zeiger and the Falmouth Family Behind Rewriting the Rules

The Waquoit Congregational Church will host an author talk with Danna Zeiger, writer of the new children’s book Rewriting the Rules, on Sunday, November 2 at 3 p.m. The event is free and open to everyone.
Zeiger’s book tells the inspiring true story of Dr. Kathleen Friel, who overcame a diagnosis of cerebral palsy to become an award-winning neuroscientist. Dr. Friel and her parents, Pat and Kevin Friel of Waquoit, will join the discussion and take part in a Q&A session following the presentation.
Published by Millbrook Press, Lerner Publishing Group, and illustrated by Josée Bisaillon, Rewriting the Rules was released Sept. 9. Written for grades 1–4, the book explores universal themes of perseverance, curiosity, and the power of possibility. It invites young readers to think deeply about neuroscience, brain injury, growth mindset, and disability advocacy.
Dr. Friel noted that there’s a lack of children’s books that address disabilities. “We need more representation of people with disabilities in children’s literature,” she said. “I am incredibly grateful to Danna and Josee for creating this beautiful book.”
Zeiger, a Massachusetts resident and former mentee of Dr. Friel, frequently visits Cape Cod and is passionate about sharing stories that celebrate resilience and inclusion.
“Kathleen herself is my inspiration!” Zeiger said. “She was my mentor in my undergrad lab at Columbia Medical School, and she was the first person I met with cerebral palsy in science of academia
“She is whip-smart, hilarious, and incredibly kind and ethical. However, the ableism she has had to fight against her whole life has been unbelievable.”
Rev. Fields agrees. “This is such an inspiring and important story,” said Rev. Nell Fields, minister of the Waquoit Congregational Church. “Kathleen, her parents, and her entire family have overcome so many obstacles to be where they are now. This book reminds all of us to keep keeping on, don’t take no for an answer, and – yes – rewrite the rules when necessary.”
The event is sponsored by No Place for Hate–Falmouth, Falmouth Jewish Congregation, Waquoit Congregational Church, and Eight Cousins Bookstore.
The Waquoit Church is located at 15 Parsons Lane and Route 28 in E. Falmouth. The Parish Hall, where the talk will take place, is accessible. For more information, contact the church office at 508-548-5269.
