Cape Cod Girl a 'Hero' in Bus Driver's OUI Arrest

A Cape Cod bus driver was charged with driving drunk with students on board—and one of those students was called a “hero” in the incident.

Everett Redmond, 62, of Brewster, was arrested Friday night.

State Police said Redmond had five students on board when he was stopped by a trooper at a Barnstable Burger King near Route 6. Police said the trooper hunted down the bus after a female student from Cape Cod Regional Technical High School called her mother and said Redmond was driving erratically. The mother then called police.

Redmond was charged with OUI (liquor, second offense) and child endangerment.

WHDH posted a photo that captured Redmond’s field sobriety test.

Cape Cod Tech Superintendent Robert Sanborn called the girl and her mother “heroes.”

Police said another bus driver transported the students home.

Redmond is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

This is Sanborn’s letter to parents:

This afternoon a Cape Destination’s driver entrusted with transporting our students to and from school was taken into police custody after one of our students called her mother to report her bus driver was driving erratically. The student’s mother contacted local police and informed them of the situation. Both mom and student are heroes today as they kept the driver from continuing his route. We are grateful for the quick thinking of our Cape Cod Tech student and her mother, as well as the Massachusetts State Police and Barnstable Police Department who ensured the safety of our students. Cape Cod Regional Technical High School is pleased to report that all students on the bus are home safe with their families this evening.
