Cape Cod Swimmer Drowns, Another Injured In Boating Accident

One man drowned while swimming Mashpee-Wakeby Pond. Another was seriously injured trying to rescue him.

MASHPEE, MA — A Cape Cod Man drowned following a boating accident in a Mashpee pond Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Around 2:15 p.m., police were called Mashpee-Wakeby Pond after reports of the accident. The Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office said one man drowned, but no foul play is suspected. Another man suffered a serious leg injury and was airlifted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

A member of the victim's family told WCVB 5 his uncle jumped off the boat to swim but struggled to tread water. The other man on the boat tried to save him but was struck by the boat propeller during the rescue attempt.

According to officials, members of the State Police diving team searched the pond and recovered the body several hours later.
