BOURNE, MA — A man intentionally drove off a cliff in Bourne Tuesday morning, sending his vehicle flying through a fence before it crashed into the Cape Cod Canal and sank, authorities said. The man, who was not identified, was rescued by firefighters and police officers and suffered minor injuries, authorities said. His vehicle, a 2006 black Ford Focus, was later hoisted up out of the water.

The crash happened at about 10:25 a.m. Police said the man sped down a pedestrian walkway at Three Mile Look and crashed through a fence before the car went airborne, flying over Canal Service Road and ultimately landing in the canal.

The walkway is the site of the original Cape Cod Canal drawbridge. The man was hospitalized and expected to be OK.
