Criminal Charges Issued In Sagamore Bridge Crash

Four cars were involved in the crash, which closed three lanes of bridge traffic on Saturday. Now, a New Bedford man faces charges.

BOURNE, MA — A Sagamore bridge crash over the weekend caused injuries and plenty of vehicle damage to those involved. Now, one of the drivers will also face criminal charges.

Massachusetts State Police officials tell Patch that a 38-year-old New Bedford man will face negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation charges stemming from the crash. He was summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, troopers assigned to the Bourne Barracks responded to reports of a multi-vehicle crash on Route 3 southbound on the Sagamore Bridge, which closed three of the four lanes on the bridge.

Due to the debris on the roadway, MassDOT dispatched a street sweeper to the scene to assist with the cleanup.

Four vehicles were involved in the crash, including a 2017 Cadillac Escalade, operated by a 38-year-old man from New Bedford; a 2014 VW Passat, operated by a 24-year-old woman from Yarmouth; a 2016 Honda Pilot, operated by a 49-year-old man from Billerica; and a 2006 Jeep Liberty, operated by a 50-year-old woman from Marshfield.

The New Bedford man was transported to South Shore Hospital via ambulance with injuries, state police said.

The operator of the Jeep Liberty was also issued criminal charges unrelated to the crash itself (unlicensed operation), but was not injured in the crash.

Occupants of the VW Passat, the driver and a 24-year-old male passenger, were transported to Cape Cod Hospital via ambulance.

The driver and passenger of the Honda Pilot were both transported to Beth Israel Hospital via ambulance.
