How Eco-Toilets prevent pollution of ponds
Nutrients from conventional toilets are carried by groundwater into ponds, 
where they grow excess algae, create bad odors,  and cause fish kills.  

How Eco-Toilets recover nutrients
Eco-Toilets keep human wastes out of septic systems, containing it for 
subsequent use as fertilizer for horticultural and agricultural plants.

How Eco-Toilets work
Urine-diverting toilets divert urine (containing 80% of household nitrogen);
compost toilets divert all human waste (containing 88% of household N)
  
Which Eco-Toilet might work in your house
Some eco-toilets divert wastes directly into storage  containers in a 
basement or lower floor.  Some direct waste to outdoor containers.  
Some store wastes in packages below the toilet for periodic removal 
and recycling.
 
About Falmouth’s incentive program 
Falmouth is planning an incentive program of up to $5000 to install 
eco-toilets.  The goal is to encourage residents to install eco-toilets and to measure how much 
nitrogen is still in the graywater from a house, business or public building using only eco-toilets.

Falmouth is pioneering this research in the US. 
The results could lead to an ecological solution to Cape Cod’s water pollution problems. 
The widespread use of eco-toilets could lead to water and energy conservation and nutrient resource recovery.
