Falmouth Fire Chief Retiring

Fire Chief Michael Small will retire next month after serving more than 30 years on the Falmouth Fire Department.

FALMOUTH, MA — Fire Chief Michael Small will retire next month after more than 30 years in the department. Small spent the last 32 years with the Falmouth Fire Department and served as deputy fire chief for five years before succeeding former Chief Mark Sullivan in 2016.

"It has been the singular honor of my life to have been in this position, and I appreciate all your support," Chief Small told the Select Board at its meeting Monday night.

The Select Board congratulated Small on his retirement. Board Chair Megan English Braga said Small built a great rapport between firefighters and town officials while providing the best possible support for residents. Douglas Brown, another board member, said Small was instrumental in implementing a new staffing plan paid for by a $971,507 override which will pay to hire eight additional firefighters.

"Chief, you will be remembered as the guy who hit that softball out of the park with the staffing plan, so thank you for putting that together and showing us what it takes to staff our department correctly," Brown said.
