Family, Young Child Safe After Hours Long Cape Cod Standoff

Criminal charges are forthcoming after a standoff in Bourne led to the discovery of two guns and ammunition, police said.

BOURNE, MA — No one was injured after a two-hour standoff with a man inside a Cape Cod home who was said to have a firearm, police said.

Around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, police in Bourne responded to a home on Old Plymouth Road where "a male was reported to be in mental health distress and in possession of a firearm," officials said.

Police said family members, including a young child, were inside the home.

"Officers responded and, after a period of time, were able to escort the family members to safety," police said. "The male remained in the residence where he was reported to have the firearm."

Officers and negotiators, with the assistance of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council Special Weapons and Tactics Team, attempted to communicate with the man and, after about two hours, he exited the residence and was taken into custody.

No one was injured in the standoff, but police did find two guns and ammunition located near where he was positioned in the home.

The man was later taken to an area hospital for evaluation, and criminal charges are expected, including unlawful possession of a gun.
