Commercial Wind: 13 Billion Blew Away The Economy
Greek investment in commercial wind 13 billion. That’s a “ B “ Billion.
Greece has a population of around 11 million people. The State of Ohio has about the same population. The land size of Greece is about the size of West Virginia.
The Greek government has a commercial wind renewable energy goal of nearly 2600 commercial wind turbines. Prior to 2010 around 1100 commercial wind turbines had been installed
Greece chose to invest primarily to wind power. The Greek turbines are mostly the gear box driven type of turbines.
Gearbox failures in wind turbines have been plaguing the wind industry for years. Design, quality and loads lead to failures.
The commercial wind turbine industry sold the gear box driven wind turbines to last twenty years. As we have seen right here in Massachusetts gear box failures almost as soon as the the two year warranty is up.
Gear boxes failures are confirmed and the Greek economy has collapsed.
Imagine if Massachusetts had purchased 2600 commercial wind turbines at 5 million each. Now add one million dollars every three to five years to change the gear boxes and then again in another 3 to 5 years.
Here is the math : 2600 X $ 5,000,000.00 and then 2600 X $1,000,000.00 every 3 to 5 years.
Greece spent roughly 13 billion in commercial wind turbines that need another 2 billion in maintenance fees every three to five years.
North America today is looking at a 10 billion dollar challenge of how to mitigate the operation and maintenance risks of gear box failures.
What happened in Greece could happen right here and in Massachusetts gear box failures are the new cottage industry that you the taxpayers are paying for.
Falmouth taxpayers are paying for their wind turbines twice !
