Hello August!

August is here. Too much traffic. Don't miss the summer before its gone!

Falmouth Recreation Department

The month of August has arrived and it appears that the Town of Falmouth is breaching the threshold of maximum capacity. Around almost every corner there seems to be more traffic than the day before. Although I’ve asked for understanding and peaceful responses to such summer time dilemmas, I am quite certain that the influx of tourism has truly tested my patience. Despite the fact that I’ve only been a full time resident for a few years and a “summer kid” my entire life, I think it’s safe to say that after this past winter and current summer, I’ve graduated from “wash ashore” status to full time, year round “townie.” It took a little while, but now I can fully appreciate and understand the perennial summertime sentiment of hard working, year round citizens as they have to share their beautiful beaches and other hot spots during the best time of the year. Hopefully we can all take some advice from one of my previous columns, urging everyone to engage in a summer time activity that you haven’t experienced before. I’ve learned that trying new things and embracing in outdoor activities & sports can serve as the best remedy for a case of the “summertime blues.” So, let’s take solace in the fact that summer is still here and we can all enjoy it for a little while longer. As the popular 1990’s movie character Ferris Bueller would say, “Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and take a look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

As the Falmouth Recreation Department continues forward with the exhilarating summer camps and sailing program, we honor our commitment to the community by planting these seeds of wisdom regarding social interaction and enjoyment through athletics and extracurricular activities. If you or your child is tired of hanging out at the house, there are still plenty of summertime activities for people of all ages to have fun and take advantage of this season. If you’re still interested in registering your child for a summer clinic in town, please read the following. Some examples of what’s available are the youth Clipper Sports Camps, the Just for Kicks soccer clinics with Coach Greg Gilbert, and the Summer Hoops programs at Falmouth High School. In addition to these youth programs, the town has many family and adult summer events as well. Some of the ongoing summer activities offered are the 15th annual SBLI Falmouth Fun Run on Saturday, August 15, 2015, Thursday Night Summer Concerts at the Band Shell, and the Art Market on Thursdays in the new green space on Main Street at the Gus Canty Community Center.

Besides preparing for last minute summer vacations and buying the kids new clothes for school, we must urge all those interested in registering for Fall Youth Soccer to do so as soon as possible. Although we are trying to live in the moment and truly appreciate the summer before it passes us by, we must notify the community once again that registration for Fall Youth Soccer has been open for over a month. Please don’t wait until the last minute to register your daughter or son, as the youth soccer program is the most popular sports program at the Gus Canty Community Center. If you’re interested in volunteering some time to coach youth soccer this Fall, please call the front desk of the Gus Canty Community Center at 508-457-2567. Thank you, as we truly appreciate all the help.

The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to Officer Roy Charles Martinsen III. Known as “Chuck” to everyone in town, Officer Martinsen helped make possible the annual shell fishing excursion to Bourne’s Pond with a group from our Adventure Summer Camp. We’d like to recognize him for all of his efforts and dedication to the town he loves so much. Thanks Chuck.
