In January 2013, Israeli superstar singer/songwriter David Broza went into a recording studio in predominantly-Palestinian East Jerusalem and, along with Israeli musicians and local Palestinian musicians, under the musical direction of the American Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, Steve Earle, recorded a new album and filmed the process. The film, East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem, shows the story of the camaraderie and bridge-building that can take place through music, even in a longtime war zone. The album East Jerusalem/West Jerusalem was released worldwide in January 2014.

Broza comments: “I have always worked alone and away from the politics which surround me. Yet I have always sung of peace. This new album pushes aside our inherent prejudices, and for 8 days and 8 nights, we sang of love, some politics and peace. The film captures these moments beautifully.”
If you are not familiar with David Broza, now is the time to discover this major, world-class artist. Broza has been considered one of the most dynamic and vibrant performers in the singer/songwriter world. His charismatic and energetic performances have brought to worldwide audiences, a fusion of the three different countries in which he was raised: Israel, Spain, and England, filling concert halls with his famous guitar playing, ranging from flamenco flavored rhythmic and percussion techniques, to whirlwind finger picking, to a signature rock and roll sound. Broza unites the three worlds by utilizing his ability to take on the troubadour tradition, up to now, featuring lyrics of the worlds’ greatest poets.

For this event at FJC, Broza’s East Jerusalem West Jerusalem tour coincides with a tour by alumni of ArtsBridge, a program that fosters peace and understanding using the arts and reflective dialogue with youth on both sides of communities in conflict. Each year Artsbridge carefully selects up to 30 Israeli, Palestinian, Israeli-Palestinian, and American students to participate in the Intercultural Youth Leadership Development Program in the United States. At this event there will be a display of artwork by past participants in the leadership program and an opportunity to meet and talk with three alumni and learn more about their experiences and the work of this non-profit organization, establish by Deborah Nathan in 2007 after the Second Intifada.
