Falmouth Recreation Department

June has arrived, and the cacophony of spring sports and activities will transition once again into our perennially popular summer camp programs. The town of Falmouth prepares for the summer months much like the Recreation Department does. As the summer rental homes reopen and ocean view hotels regain business throughout town, our staff organizes and finalizes the list of campers, junior staff, and activities featured at our summer camps. The town adjusts for the summer months physically too, as the landscapes on every property are all uniquely trimmed and crafted with beautiful bushes, plants and flowers blossoming with vivid colors and wonderful scents. Much like the Recreation Department, we shed from our normal appearance and attire by loading up on sunscreen and bearing the summer camp “tye-dye” t-shirts to reinforce the casual and fun summer time atmosphere. The environment that is recreated every year in Falmouth during these months is truly captured and embraced by the Recreation Department. But before we think too much about the heat and sunshine, we hope to witness another strong finish to the spring season, as our amazing student athletes are firing on all cylinders as they approach the end of the school year.

The Spring Baseball League has been reinvigorated this season with the help of additional staff and volunteers this year. We can’t thank all of the parents and older siblings enough for coaching our young baseball players. Be sure to cheer on these little sluggers at one of the fields in town before the last game of the season. You can find them playing on Saturdays at Teaticket Elementary School (Junior Baseball), Medeiros Field (Girl’s Softball), Fonseca Field (Pony League) and behind the Gus Canty Community Center on Tuesdays/Thursdays (Wiffle T-Ball). The Archery program is closing in on its final target as well, as Monday afternoons with Mr. Olenick have been full of excitement as per usual.

The Early Engineers program concluded last week and one thing is for sure, we are definitely revisiting this program again in the future. By the end of the program, every student had developed their creative thinking skills, and most importantly, received positive reinforcement from our staff and their fellow engineers. Another popular non athletic program is the Animal Rescue Quest. Searching for fascinating animals within our town, this program has had spectacular results. This week’s journey is to a little gem in Woods Hole called Peterson Farm. Here, the group will get to meet some exotic animals such as llamas and alpacas. They will also get to experience something special in learning how border collies are trained to herd sheep. The Recreation Department recognizes the importance of immersing the youth in fun and educational programs like these ones amidst the athletic past times that are continually offered.

The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to Barbara Rubino. “Barb” has been working for the Recreation Department and the Town of Falmouth for many years and her time, dedication, and efforts should definitely be recognized. Making a positive impact on everyone she meets, Barb is an essential pillar in our community and we are certainly lucky to have her. Thanks Barb.
