Lawmakers Ask SSA To Reconsider Woods Hole Terminal Design

Two state legislators are calling on the Steamship Authority to develop a new design. And they're not the only ones.

WOODS HOLE, MA – Two state legislators are joining the call for the Steamship Authority to reconsider its design for a new Woods Hole ferry terminal. State. Sen. Vinny deMacedo, a Republican from Plymouth, and state Rep. Dylan Fernandes, who represents Woods Hole, wrote an open letter to SSA General Manager Robert Davis requesting that the service "work with the Woods Hole community to identify a terminal design that reflects community input and the unique character of the village."

The saltbox-style stone and glass building, unveiled Oct. 8, was met with pushback from several residents, according to the Cape Cod Times. The building would include a ticket area, glass atrium waiting room, restrooms and concessions on the first floor and mechanical systems, offices, restrooms and a training room on the second floor, the Times reported. But it would also obscure the view of Woods Hole from the Crane Street bridge, and many have argued the design does not align with the village's aesthetic.

The architects who designed the terminal said at the forum the stone and glass were chosen to withstand harsh weather and salt air, according to the Times. The project, which is estimated at $60 million, also includes three new ferry slips and two new passenger loading piers.
