Mashpee Man Arraigned In Fatal Shooting

MASHPEE, MA — A Mashpee man was ordered held without bail after prosecutors said he shot and killed a 45-year-old New Bedford man.

Norman Dias, 32, was arraigned in Falmouth District Court and was charged with first degree murder.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m., Monday. Police were called to the area of Collins Lane after reports of shots fired and found Damian Anderson with several gunshot wounds. Emergency officials rushed Anderson to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Cape Cod Times reported Dias and a woman were found in the woods near the scene. Police said officers found Dias with a spent shotgun shell in his pocket. Dias told police he was in the area and had an altercation with certain men, prosecutors said. Police said Dias appeared intoxicated but was later released after questioning.

Prosecutors said the police investigation later revealed probable cause, and Dias was arrested in Boston around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Dias will be held at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility without bail. he was scheduled to return to court Aug. 20.
