Mass. State Police Mourn Death of Sergeant's Son

BOURNE, MA — State Police are mourning the death of a sergeant's son.

John Kotfila, Jr., 30, was killed Saturday morning in a crash in Tampa. Police said a wrong-way driver struck his cruiser on the Selmon Expressway. The wrong-way driver was also killed.

His father is Mass. State Police Sgt. John Kotfila, assigned to the Bourne barracks.

"Our prayers tonight are with him, his wife, and their three surviving children—one of whom is a Falmouth Police officer," State Police Col. Richard McKeon said in a statement. "It is clear that Sergeant Kotfila instilled in his children the same sense of duty, dedication, and service to others that he himself has embraced throughout his career."

Florida police said they were investigating whether alcohol was involved in the crash.
