Dong uses 8 Megawatt turbines developed by Denmark’s Vestas and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The 8 MW turbine has a tip height of about 725 feet with 525 foot rotors. Siemens already has plans for 10 megawatt turbines.
The incomplete Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal was being built for much smaller Cape Wind 3.6 megawatt turbines. The terminal sits at 113 million dollars and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center will only say its going into phase two.
A single special ocean wind barge called the RDMacDonald was being built to fit through the hurricane gates in New Bedford Harbor . The hurricane gates have a legal width clearance of only 120 feet. The largest ship to ever enter New Bedford Harbor was 82 feet wide. Ocean wind turbine barges world wide exceed the 120 legal width of the hurricane gates.
The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, state and local embarrassed politicians along with the news media refuse to acknowledge the massive financial fiasco of the New Bedford ocean port and the small opening at the hurricane gates.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management the federal permitting authority has never given New Bedford a permit to build and construct commercial wind turbines. Quonset Point, Rhode Island with two 1500 foot wide channels was the federally permitted port for Cape Wind. During World War II Quonset Point could hold and service four battle ships at one time.
The construction and bonding cost of New Bedford Harbor are costing taxpayers $187,500.00 a month in interest.
There needs to be a judicial and legislative review of the construction of the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal
