New Beginnings
April has ended and May has finally arrived. Spring programs are in full effect.
Falmouth Recreation Department
April has ended, and May is here. As the eternally positive Jonathan Lockwood Huie has said, “Celebrate endings, for they precede new beginnings.” In light of this affirmation, the Falmouth Recreation Department gladly accepts to celebrate the completion of April and the cold weather, in order to make way for May and all of its warm days. The month of May in Falmouth is typically a very promising time of year, as new life is sprouting everywhere and the once partially inhabited town is slowly but surely regaining its hefty summer population status. Faces of old and some new families will soon enjoy the beaches and wonderful venues offered in our beloved Upper Cape community. Parallel to the mission of recreation, we hope to present more opportunities for our community in order to breed further interest in healthy and fun extracurricular activities. Thank you to all the parents whom volunteer their time and energy to help coach our young sports stars. Your efforts are vital to the success of recreation sports, and we appreciate your continued support. Please read the following to learn more about what the Falmouth Recreation Department is offering this month and the near future.
In addition to Spring Baseball having a successful launch to the season, many of our other programs and events are following suit. The Senior Walking & Talking program has enjoyed a few walks thus far, visiting different sections of the Shining Sea Bikeway and Spohr Gardens. Combining light exercise, friendly conversation & sight-seeing, this program provides a wonderful activity for seniors in town. The Gus Canty Community Center hosted the annual Mother & Son Dance last Friday night, which featured free pizza, soda, board games, and dancing in the gym. Our in house DJ, “Jumping Joe” Olenick kept the house rocking, playing popular hits from today and some oldies. We anticipate the same excitement next month for the annual Father & Daughter Dance on Friday, June 5th.

The Early Engineers program started this week, and it was an awe-inspiring turnout. Within minutes, we had over twenty students from Teaticket Elementary School constructing various buildings and project houses with what seemed to be endless piles of LEGOS. This program continues to gain popularity and we are proud to promote more programs like this one in the future. Beginning next week, we are offering another unique youth program to Morse Pond School students called the, Animal Rescue Quest. This program entails venturing on discovery quests throughout town in search of different animals. We will visit the WHOI Aquarium, Smithfield Farm, Peterson Farm and one of our local Herring Runs. Please sign up your children for this exciting and educational program, as we still have some spots left.
Summer is around the corner. If you’re still looking to keep your children busy this summer by having lots of fun with other kids, it’s not too late to register for the Teen “Xtreme” Summer Camp, the Adventure Summer Camp, and the Summer Sailing program. You must register online for one of our beloved summer camps, so be sure to visit our website for all pertinent information: www.falmouthmass.us/rec. If you have any questions, please call our front desk at 508-457-2567.

The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to the Human Resources Department for the Town of Falmouth. A special thanks to Human Resources Director Denise Coleman and her staff, Cathy-Lynn Belair & Kristin Nickerson for organizing and running the 2015 Health Fair at the Gus Canty Community Center. This event was very successful, as it offered much needed services to all current and retired town employees. Thanks.
