The Return to Normalcy
August is nearly over, the Road Race is in the books, and our beach parking lots have vacancy once again...
Falmouth Recreation Department
We are approaching the end of August quite rapidly and the sentiment around town is rather bittersweet. Although it’s undeniable that local residents rejoice at the departure of their transient summer neighbors, it’s difficult to watch the beach days slowly but surely dwindle. However, let’s not forget that some of the best beach days in Falmouth occur during this final term of the summer. Throughout our town and the rest of Cape Cod, several college students are being relieved at their temporary summer posts, and the beach parking lots conveniently have vacancy once again. Another positive byproduct to this end of the summer scramble is a severe decline in the heavy volume of traffic. I’m sure that puts a smile on many faces, because once again we will be able to purchase a delicious coffee before work in a relatively normal amount of time. Once again, I’m asking all of us to be patient, because we are almost there, and never forget that it can always be worse. Let’s be thankful to have endured another busy summer season and focus on truly enjoying and appreciating what we have while the summer heat is still rising off the cement in the streets. If the tourism and influx of traffic has deterred you from enjoying our local waters, I advise you to make a refreshing trip to the beach or a fun boating excursion with friends and family within the next month. So be sure to keep the bathing suit in the normal rotation for a little while longer, and start thinking about breaking out the hooded sweatshirts for those cool, late summer nights. With that being said, the return to “Cape Codder” normalcy is in effect.
The Falmouth Recreation Department has officially concluded its summer camp programs but we are still supporting many events around town. If anyone is interested in some of the ongoing summertime activities and events offered in town, we still have Thursday Night Summer Concerts at the Band Shell, and the Art Market on Thursdays in the new green space on Main Street at the Gus Canty Community Center. Also, don’t forget to plan ahead as we have some youth and adult programs scheduled this Fall which are currently open for registration. For grades 2-4, we are offering a Fall Ball baseball program (working on basic skills of baseball) which is the precursor to the Winter Indoor Baseball program we’ve run in years past. We are also offering once again the Senior Walking and Talking program, which runs from September 8th – October 27th and is offered to all active senior citizens interested in gaining some extra exercise and friendly company once a week.

Besides preparing for last minute summer vacations and buying the kids new clothes for school, we must urge all those interested in registering for Fall Youth Soccer to do so as soon as possible. Please don’t wait until the last minute to register your daughter or son, as the youth soccer program is the most popular sports program at the Gus Canty Community Center. If you’re interested in volunteering some time to coach youth soccer this Fall, please call the front desk of the Gus Canty Community Center at 508-457-2567. Thank you, as we truly appreciate all the help.
The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is a special nomination this week. We would like to recognize the entire Summer Camp staff this week for all of their heroic and gracious deeds performed over the summer. Although working with kids may seem like an easy task, I can assure you that our staff earned every penny they made this summer. Thank you for making this summer a memorable experience for the kids.
