September Brings Youth Soccer
The month of September is here. Youth Soccer and many other mainstay programs are starting back up again. Be sure to check out our website.
Falmouth Recreation Department
September is the genesis of my favorite time of the year in the Town of Falmouth. The forecast during this month is a wonderful hybrid of pleasant sunshine by day and cool and comfortable dry air by night. There is much needed relief from the epic amount of humidity and traffic, so a heavy dose of autumn weather should provide some sanity and vacancy throughout the Upper Cape. The Falmouth Recreation Department has transitioned into the Fall season and has left the memorable days of summer camp behind, as the staff has just completed painting the fields for youth soccer this week. Although this time of year can be a shock to the system for our younger generation (aka “back to school”), we hope that our athletic and extracurricular programs continue to serve as a positive and balancing outlet for the youth. Balance is the key for everyone, so we encourage all residents to embrace these unique opportunities that are provided at the Gus Canty Community Center. Not every town on the Cape has such incredible resources as ours, so please take advantage of what’s offered to you as a resident here in Falmouth. We hope to continue to serve our community and bestow upon our residents a sentiment of peace, respect, and support through providing a standard of excellence in recreation all year round. As we prepare for the Fall season to commence, we’d like to show our appreciation to all of the parents whom volunteer their time to coach our youth sports programs. Without your help, our mission cannot be accomplished. From everyone at the Falmouth Recreation Department, we’d like to say thank you so much.
As I mentioned last week, it’s time to get down to business and consume orange slices and water. That’s right folks the Falmouth Recreation Department is gearing up for our powerhouse program “Youth Soccer” (starts on Saturday, September 12th). So for all you soccer fans out there, you can watch our future World Cuppers play every Saturday this Fall (from Sept 12- Oct. 31) at the Falmouth Heights & Trotting Park fields. Munchkin soccer (ages 4 & 5 co-ed) and Instructional soccer (grades 1 and 2 co-ed) will be held at the Falmouth Heights field from 9:00am – 2:30pm. The Junior (grades 3 & 4) and Senior (grades 5 & 7) divisions will play at Trotting Park from 9:00am- 2:30pm. At the Gus Canty Community Center, youth supervised Open Gym has officially begun once again, which runs from 2:30pm – 4:45pm, Monday – Friday. Starting on September 16th, we are offering an eight week long Fall Ball co-ed baseball training program for grades 2-4 at Fonseca Field from 4:30-5:30pm on Wednesdays. On Saturday, September 19th from 10:00am – 2:00pm, the Gus Canty Community Center will host a special event called Family Emergency Preparedness and Fire Prevention Fair. This event is free, and lots of fun for the kids, as there will be numerous emergency vehicles on site plus free Child ID kits. It also covers preparations for sheltering pets, elders, and disabled people during emergency situations. The Thursday After School program, sponsored by Jack’s Pact, will be restarting again on Thursday, October 1st from 3:15pm-4:45pm for grades 5-6. This program caters to kids in need of a safe and positive environment after school during the hours where their parents are still working. As usual, this program includes gym games, use of the teen center, as well as free snacks and juice box drinks.

In addition to the youth programs, we have many adult programs returning this week as well. Open Adult Walking goes from September – June, Monday – Friday, from 8:00am-9:00am and 11:00am-12:00pm. Open Co-Ed Adult Volleyball runs on Tuesdays evenings from 7:00pm – 9:00pm, ages 18 and up, and Open Adult Basketball is available again from 12:00pm-2:30pm, Monday-Friday. Pickup Co-ed Adult Soccer is also returning, with games every Wednesday, ages 21 and up, from 6:30pm-8:30pm from September 16th- December 16th. For our senior citizens, we are offering the Senior Walking and Talking program again, which is held on Tuesdays from 9:00am-11:00am, September 8th – October 27th. The cost is $10 and it’s well worth the price of admission, as this is a phenomenal way to start your day and enjoy some friendly conversation with your peers. Be on the lookout for more adult and youth programs this Fall, such as the Community School Exercise Class, the Jackie Sorensen Aerobic Class, Ki-Aikido, and Tai Ji Quan.
The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to Bill Scribner. Bill has been assigned with the arduous task of rebuilding the bleachers at Guv Fuller Field. We’d like to recognize Bill for taking on this project, as this is a vital part of the entire experience for spectators and fans of sports and recreation here in Falmouth. Thanks Bill.
