Spring is in the Air

Baseball season begins next week, the mini spring youth programs have ended, and many more programs/events begin next month.

Halfway through the month of April and the town of Falmouth has fully reawakened from the long and arduous winter. The ospreys are soaring above us once again, the boats have returned to the harbor, and the sun is shining brighter every day. Spring is definitely in the air. Although the better weather means that the Gus Canty Community Center is seeing less foot traffic in the gymnasium, the Recreation Department Staff is excited to be outside once again. We are fully embracing the elements with our community, with the start of the Youth Baseball programs. April 25th marks the opening day for our Junior Baseball, Girl’s Softball, Pony, & Wiffle T-Ball Leagues. Be sure to cheer on our little sluggers on Saturdays this spring at the various baseball parks in town. We are certainly looking forward to witnessing lots of home runs, triple plays, and grand slams from our future major league baseball prospects. Without further ado…“batter up.”

The Falmouth Recreation Department is proud to report that the mini spring youth programs were a huge success once again this year. The Multi Sports program showcased a plethora of activities including indoor soccer, wiffle t-ball, mini hoop basketball, curling, and variations of the most famous recreation sport, dodgeball. The Winter Indoor Baseball program finished up this week and it felt like Ft. Meyer’s during Spring Training with the Boston Red Sox. Our little baseball enthusiasts learned how to catch, throw and hit a ball and run the bases like little league all stars. We’d like to thank all of the parents who helped make this program successful, as we were fortunate to have many volunteers engage with the various training stations every week.

We lucked out with the weather last weekend, as the 2015 Family Scavenger Hunt went off without a hitch. We had over a dozen families participate, following clues to various locations and landmarks in town and completing several challenges. Ultimately leading them back to the Gus Canty Community Center for the finish line, each family received medals, and free snacks/drinks. We had lots of positive feedback from this free family event, as many parents mentioned it was nice to spend a few hours with their children in the car, doing something fun, interactive and educational. The Falmouth Recreation Department will definitely support more events like this one in the future. Coming up during next week’s school vacation, we are offering another free, youth sports event called the Springtime Sports Spectacular. This will be offered on Wednesday, April 22nd from 1pm-4pm, ages 6-10. This event will feature various gym sports such as indoor soccer, wiffle t-ball, and dodgeball. If you’re not going away for vacation, this is a perfect opportunity to keep your children busy for one day during the week off from school.

The Falmouth Recreation Department “Person of the Week” is awarded to Tom Rutledge. Tom is a student at Bridgewater State University and he volunteered his time on Saturdays the past six weeks with our Multi Sports program. We appreciate all of your help and hope to see you continue as a positive mentor for the Falmouth community. Thanks Tom.
