WOODS HOLE, MA – The Steamship Authority this week released three design alternatives for its Woods Hole ferry terminal amid outcry over its original design. The authority will hold public meetings on the revised designs on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. in the Falmouth High School auditorium and Monday, April 8 at 5 p.m. in the Katharine Cornell Theater at Tisbury Town Hall.

The original height of the building was 45 feet, which many complained would block the view of the harbor from the Crane Street bridge.

The first design is a two-story saltbox with a 40 1/2-foot roof; the second option, a two-story gable, would be 42 feet at some points with more than 40 percent of the building having a 33 1/2-foot height restriction; and the third design is a three-story gable with a 58/4-foot roof on one-third of the building and a 42.4-foot peak on the remaining parts.

The designs are 113 feet in length as opposed to the original 123-foot design, leaving space for an exterior walkway.

The designs will likely not fully address concerns over the harbor view. According to the Cape Cod Times, the authority ran an experiment in December showing that a one-story building would still block the view.
