SUV Floating Off Falmouth Yacht Club Leads Cops To Break-In Probe, Florida Man: Police

FALMOUTH, MA — An SUV floating in the ocean club led the law to evidence of an attempted break-in at the Falmouth Yacht Club and an injured Florida man staying at a nearby motel, police said.

The Mazda CX-5 was seen "floating in the shallow water just off the beach" shortly before 7 a.m. Sunday, the Falmouth Police Department said in a media release.

"The vehicle had extensive front-end damage and was unoccupied," the release said. "A preliminary investigation suggested that the vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Clinton Avenue before continuing straight into a guardrail separating the sidewalk from the beach. The vehicle crashed through the guardrail and ultimately came to rest in the water."

During the ensuing search for the driver and any passengers, officers "located evidence of an attempted breaking and entering at the Falmouth Yacht Club, as well as discarded property on the club's grounds," according to the release.

About an hour and a half after the Mazda was discovered floating off t he beach, "officers located the suspected operator, a 23-year-old male from Florida, inside a hotel room at the neighboring Tides Hotel," the release said.

"The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department responded and transported the individual to Falmouth Hospital in stable condition," according to the release.

A heavy-duty towing company was called to pull the SUV out of the water, the release said, and "there was no indication of any environmental impact resulting from the incident."

"The crash and the subsequent activity involving the suspected operator remain under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department," according to the release. "Criminal charges are expected upon completion of the investigation."
