Tropical Storm Hermine Knocks Out Power to Hundreds in Cape Cod Region

Breaking: hundreds currently without power on Cape Cod from Tropical Storm Hermine. More outages possible later tonight.

FALMOUTH, MA — Tropical Storm Hermine on Monday knocked out power to hundreds on Cape Cod, closed beaches, and canceled ferry service. The storm drenched the Cape and whipped up 50 mph winds, tearing trees into power lines across the state on the Labor Day holiday.

New Bedford and Sandwich saw the most power outages Monday; each town had about 500 outages around 6:30 p.m., according to Eversource. Power was restored to most of New Bedford by 7 p.m.; Sandwich still had 471 outages at that time.

Nantucket beaches were closed Monday and the Steamship Authority canceled ferry service. Dangerous rip currents will remain a threat up and down the Massachusetts coast through next week, according to the National Weather Service.

More outages were possible later Monday night, as 30-40 mph winds were expected. A tropical storm warning is in effect through Tuesday morning.
