Diane Keon, the featured speaker at this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday breakfast in Falmouth, is an anti-bias workshop leader and educator at Nauset High School, where she uses a curriculum developed by the acclaimed Brookline-based educational organization Facing History & Ourselves (www.facinghistory.org) that helps students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives. This course will go into a deeper examination of many topics addressed in Ms. Keon’s January presentation. The first session will focus on history, covering subjects such as “Guns, Germs, and Steel” (Jared Diamond’s bestselling historical study that examines the great forces that have shaped human history over the past 10,000 years), the science of race (Petrus Camper and Samuel George Morton), and cultural racism (examining artifacts from American popular culture). The second session will focus on institutional racism and the psychology of race. The course will combine presentations by Ms. Keon with opportunities for reflection and discussion.
