The College Move-In Toolbox

By Cornerstone Real Estate

The transition from the laid back summer routine to the academic school year routine is always a tough one - who wants to write papers and study for finals when you were once able to spend your days covered in sand and seawater or lounging by the pool? As summer begins to wind down, reality sets in and you realize it is time to start September 1st move-in preparation. Planning and strategizing your move is crucial, regardless of age or experience. Don’t let lack of preparation ruin the first few days in your new apartment. We’ve created a list of important things for you, and your parents, to remember when preparing to move into your apartment that will ensure you are able to kick off the 2015-2016 school year right.

1. Keep Calm and Make a List
Stay organized by making a list of things you need to bring with you. Think of each room in your apartment and what is necessary for that particular room. For example, for a bathroom you will need toilet paper, toilet cleaner, a shower curtain… and the list goes on. Having a list will make it easier for you to know what you need and what you already have.

2. Divide and Discuss
It is important when you are moving into an apartment with other people that you all discuss who is bringing what. Everyone can bring assorted items to furnish the rooms of the apartment. Stick by this list so you don’t cause confusion or apartment packing overload. Also, be sure to discuss food and grocery shopping and how that will unfold throughout the year. There might be some essentials food items that you may consider purchasing together, such as condiments and baking supplies.

3. Battle of the Rooms
Choosing rooms doesn’t need to be a battle straight from Game of Thrones. Whether you decide on a “first come, first serve” method or pre-planned room picking, the decision should be clear and agreed upon by all roommates PRIOR to move-in day. Some great ways to decide can be picking names out of hat, drawing straws or a good old fashion game of rock, paper, scissors. Any anonymous way of picking rooms works best to ensure rooms are assigned fairly.

4. Don’t be the “Pack Rat”
We all know one. Over packing not only creates more work for you, it also clutters bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and kitchens. One of the most common over packing scenarios is bringing every clothing item from home. Do you really need your 3 puffy jackets in August? Save space, time and energy by only bringing those items you need. You can get those jackets when it begins to get cool (plus you can drop off some of your summer clothes to make even more room!) When in doubt, leave it out.
Equally important as avoiding over packing clothes is to stay away from bringing too many decorations. Take the time to scope out the size of wall space, counter space and clothing space prior to packing.

5. Budget for Bills
Having your own apartment without parents is exciting and fun, especially for a college student but with a new pad comes responsibility and a lot of bills. There is no need to become worried or frazzled by the negatively associated word ‘bill’, but it is important to understand and budget accordingly. Be sure to keep costs down by shutting off lights when you are no longer in a room and unplugging electronics and cords when you are not using them. Though paying bills is never fun, budgeting and planning for them will help prepare you for the long road ahead! Check the websites of your local providers for energy and money saving tips to use in your apartment!

Moving can be stressful however, if you follow some of the basic tips provided, it will allow you kick off your new apartment and the new year right! Take a step back, breathe, plan and enjoy 
