David Price Doesn't Need Surgery But Could Miss Opener

Red Sox spring training update: ace David Price injured his arm and there's talk he could start the season on the disabled list.

FORT MYERS, FL — Red Sox Nation can breathe a sigh of relief. Ace David Price on Friday said he's rejoining the team after injuring his arm in a spring training game Tuesday in Fort Myers, Florida.

Price traveled to Indiana to meet with Dr. James Andrews after injuring his elbow. He reportedly had an MRI and sought at least two medical opinions about his recovery options. Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Friday Price will not need surgery — just about a week and a half of rest and some medication to ease swelling.

Andrews determined Price suffered a left forearm injury that's "muscular in nature" with no ligament damage, according to mlb.com. Farrell initially said Price will need 7-10 days of rest but Price said Friday there's no timetable. There's a possibility Price could start the season on the disabled list, though the Red Sox have not yet made a decision, according to mlb.com.

"I'll know when I feel good enough to go out there and throw a baseball," Price told reporters. "(The doctors said) to listen to my body."

Price signed a seven-year, $217 million contract prior to last season. He was consistent, but not great, in his first year in Boston. Price went 17-9 in the regular season but had a rough go of it in the postseason as the Red Sox were bounced by the Cleveland Indians in the divisional round.
