BOSTON, MA — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia had left knee surgery Wednesday in a New York hospital, The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham reports. Abraham reports it was cartilage restoration surgery. He is expected to be out for seven months, including the first two of the 2018 season.
The 34-year-old Pedroia's knee had him on the disabled list this season and limited him to designated hitter at times. The longest-tenured active Red Sox player and and four-time All-Star played in only 105 games this season. He hit just seven home runs this season, tied for the second fewest of his career.
Red Sox President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowksi earlier in the season called Pedroia's knee injury something he'll have to deal with for the rest of his career.
