The Turin Horse by Belá Tarr (Hungary/France/Germany/Switzerland/US, 2011, 146 min.). Immaculately photographed in Tarr’s renowned long takes and tracking shots, The Turin Horse is a provocative meditation on human nature. After witnessing a carriage driver whipping his horse, Friedrich Nietzsche ran to the scene and collapsed; he would spend his final years in almost total silence. But this isn’t a film about Nietzsche; instead, Tarr focuses on the driver and his family. Tarr immerses us into the family’s daily life in the austere, unforgiving Hungarian countryside. Winner of the Silver Bear at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.
