Ortiz, Betts Injured in Disappointing Loss

The Red Sox had a 4-1 lead after six innings of Wednesday night's game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. Then they lost the lead in the seventh, Mookie Betts in the eighth, and David Ortiz in the ninth.

What a stinker.

Boston's bullpen imploded in a 9-4 loss to their rivals, but the bigger concern for the slumping Sox was the loss of their two All-Stars - three if you count the earlier announcement that Steven Wright would miss his scheduled Thursday start with a shoulder injury suffered on the bases as a pinch runner in Los Angeles.

Betts will have testing Thursday; he came out of the game with a tight right calf.

Ortiz was pulled after fouling a pitch off his right shin. Early reports were that Ortiz passed initial tests and might not miss much time.

Drew Pomeranz only allowed one run but couldn't make it out of the sixth inning. Matt Barnes, Fernando Abad, Junichi Tazawa, and Robbie Ross. Jr. quickly let the game get out of hand.

The Red Sox were just 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

The crowd finally got their first-last look at Alex Rodriguez, who has said Friday will be his final game with the Yankees. He pinch hit late to boos.

Rodriguez is expected to start in Thursday night's rubber game against Eduardo Rodriguez.
