In Pitchers' Duel, Sox Fall Short

It was everything we expected. Except the win. Also: More injuries on the roster front.

Monday afternoon's pitchers' duel between Red Sox lefty ace Chris Sale and the Tigers' longtime marquee arm Justin Verlander was everything you'd expect: Fast, low scoring, and came down to a dink and a dunk.

Unfortunately for Boston, they were on the short end of it. Verlander got the better of Sale, who came out for the eighth inning only to allow the go-ahead run with two outs, and the Tigers won, 2-1, in a 2-hour-44-minute affair.

The Sox scored their lone run in the second inning on a double-play ground by Brock Holt.

Sale struck out 10 in his second start with the team.

On the roster front, Jackie Bradley Jr. will be sent to the disabled list with a sprained knee suffered over the weekend. Xander Bogaerts couldn't make it back from bereavement in Aruba because of a canceled flight, and Hanley Ramirez stayed in Boston after battling the flu that has infected a number involved with the team.
