Red Sox Ace Chris Sale Hits Disabled List

The top pitcher on the Red Sox will miss at least one start, the team said.

BOSTON, MA — The Red Sox didn't add anyone at Tuesday's trading deadline for Major League Baseball. They did lose someone, however, even if just temporarily.

The first-place Sox placed left-handed ace Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation, retroactive to July 28. Pitcher Brandon Workman has been called up to take Sale's spot on the roster.

Boston is hopeful Sale makes his next start. The team has been cautious with the slender pitcher, lessening his workload this season in hopes he holds up down the stretch. The Red Sox have the best record in baseball and a sizable lead on the Yankees in the American League East, meaning they can probably afford to skip a start or two in hopes of keeping their best pitcher fresh.

Sale has been the top pitcher in the American League this season, emerging as the Cy Young favorite after a recent historic run of dominance. He is 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA and a league-high 207 strikeouts in 141 innings.

The Red Sox did add to their team Monday night, trading for four-time All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler.
