Red Sox Manager John Farrell: I Have Cancer

Farrell said he has lymphoma and will leave the team for treatment.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell announced Friday he has cancer.

Farrell made the revelation at a pregame press conference. He said he has lymphoma, a type of cancer that attacks the immune system. He said it’s “very curable,” according to the team.

Farrell said he will leave the team for the rest of the season for treatment. Bench coach Torey Lovullo will manage the team in the interim.

Farrell’s chemotherapy treatment is expected to last nine weeks. On Monday, he had a mass removed during a hernia surgery in Detroit, according to the team.

Farrell is 53 years old. He’s in his third year as Red Sox manager. In 2013, he led the team a World Series title.
