Red Sox Prospect Nears Fastball Speed Record: Report

The pitch reached speeds just shy of the fastest pitch ever recorded in MLB history.

SALEM, VA—Opposing batters could be in for some trouble if Red Sox prospect Michael Kopech reaches the big show.

According to a report by CBS Boston, Kopech unleashed a 105 mph fastball during a game for the High-A Salem Red Sox. Kopech's pitch fell just shy of the 105.1 mph fastball record set by Current Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman in 2010, when he was pitching for the Cincinnati Reds.

The speed readings were not displayed on the Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium scoreboard, but the pitch was recorded on two radar guns at the stadium.

The pitch comes after a trying campaign for the young fireballer, as he was sidelined for over two moths after fracturing his hand during an altercation with a teammate in Spring Training. He was also suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Things are starting to turn up for the 2014 first-round pick, as he has thrown nine scoreless innings for High-A Salem this season.
