Wheelock Family Theatre receives Bridge Award

On Saturday, May 17th, 2014, the Wheelock Family Theatre (WFT) received the Bridge Award from the Oscar Micheaux Family Theater at the National Center for Afro American Artists for their leadership in access and inclusion and dedication to improving the lives of urban youth and families. The Bridge Award recognizes the Education of Youth in the Theatre Arts and acknowledges commitment, dedication in building bridges based on Arts/Education that impacts cultural values and community development.

Elbert Joseph, who grew up acting in the Wheelock Family Theatre, accepted the Bridge Award on their behalf. Joseph gave a speech in which he credited Wheelock Family Theatre for their diversity and inclusion of actors of all ages, races, classes, and range of physical abilities, “I’ve had people tell me, "You’re an amazing performer", "You have changed my perception of certain things," and "You’re a role model for the community".  It’s all because WFT welcomed me into their community. They changed how I viewed myself. WFT transforms lives. Live theatre transforms lives!”
