Woman Injured by Foul Ball at Fenway Park

The woman spent the night in the hospital but has returned home. She said she was amazed by the quick response from fans and rescue staff.

Stephanie Wapenski had one of the best moments of her life at Fenway Park, and now she can add the historic ballpark as a place where she may have had her scariest moment.

On Friday night, Wapenski, of Branford, CT, who is originally from Taunton, was watching her home team take on the rival Yankees when a foul ball was ripped into the stands hitting her right in the head.

The scary moment led to several fans and emergency workers rushing to her side. Wapenski was able to leave the stadium under her own power but she did receive 35 stitches, and spent the night in the hospital before heading back home to Connecticut on Saturday, NBC Connecticut reports.

It was just one year ago that Wapenski’s fiance, Matt Faenza, proposed to her at Fenway Park on the big screen in center field.

In an interview with the Boston Herald, Wapenski said she could see the ball leave the batter’s bat but there wasn’t enough time for her to get out of the way.

“...it was just a whole lot of shock. I was saying, ‘Wow, that ball somehow found me in the crowd’ — it all happened very, very fast,” Wapenski told the Boston Herald.

Wapenski said she was touched by the quick response from worried fans who were nearby.

“Two guys took the shirts off their backs to help me. Someone else managed to get ice and bring it down to me. So, by the time Fenway staff arrived we had the bleeding
contained,” Wapenski said via the Boston Herald. “...Everybody stepped up for me in a big way.”
